Fading painting by an inmate at the Eastern State Penitentiary, ESP, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ESP opened in 1829 and closed in 1971. It was the largest and most expensive prison ever built and became the model for more than 300 prisons worldwide. The innovative wagon wheel design had individual cells with vaulted sky-lit ceilings. The emphasis was on reform rather than punishment. Al Capone and Slick Willie Sutton were some of the more notorious criminals who did time here.
